AI “art” is not art: my opinion on AI “art”

I see the potential AI has and how it can be beneficial in certain areas of life. Although I don’t agree how many resources it needs to function (like water). However I don’t think art is an area where AI needs to be. Art is something that humans do creatively. We have done it since we existed (cave paintings). We use art to tell stories, to give a voice to minorities and to express ourselves. This should not be taken over by robots or AI. Robots do not have the capacity to express themselves creatively since they are not sentient beings so therefore they cannot express emotions or ideas through art. They can copy but they cannot create something new, they copy human behaviour or anything that is programmed into them so it would already have to exist. The same goes for AI. AI needs to be fed data for it to be able to do its thing.

Many artists are not happy about AI art. This is because AI is fed images of art and produces “new” art from those images, essentially copying artists’ art. It is plagiarism and it is very controversial in the art world to copy other peoples art. Many artists have spoken out against AI art. People who use AI art, have the argument, it helps people who are not creative create. This argument invalid because anyone can create art. Anyone can learn how to paint, draw or sculpt. It does not have to be “good” because art should be something we do for fun not something we feel forced to do.

I love art, and I love making art. I am in no way good at art but I love painting and drawing and taking pictures and sewing. I would never ever use AI to create art. It copies from people without having the rights to do it and without their knowledge but it often get way more attention, likes and views.

Some artists that have spoken out against AI art and used their platform to educate people are Eva Toorent (@evaboneva) and J.J. Ellis (@jjellisart on instagram)They have several posts critiquing AI art and explaining to people why it is harmful for traditional artists. One post from J.J. Ellis said: “If we go on letting Ai further remove us from the process of creating, letting it flood our senses with noise, erase our history, and making it harder to find real art and information, we will cease as a functioning species. Like an old couple that dies days apart, if art goes we go.” Eva has a post where she explains how to detect AI art!

So to conclude, to me AI needs to get out of the art world in the sense of copying people’s art and not crediting them because AI is stealing art to “create” art. I am very critical because I too create art and would not be okay with someone or something stealing my art and pretending they made something new.
