With social media being over the place, everyone being over-connected, I cannot but pause and question “Is this what I really want?”
When social media emerged, it was the hype to be online, to post, and follow your friends. It was something direct and fun. Nowadays, it seems like most of the users are trying to sell something, whether it is a product, a service, or even “sell” to you how happy they are.
A lot of times when I catch myself scrolling, I am thinking about the purpose of the action. Why do I spend time in my life just to watch what others are doing? What does it have to do with me? Why do I have the need to compare all the time?
We post pictures and videos of our best moments and accomplishments, in an effort to impress and connect. But being constantly evaluated and trying to prove ourselves is a condition that separates rather than brings together.
So, instead of maintaining a constant online presence, perhaps the alternative lies in the effort to discover your true self. To spend more time reading books or anything that interests you, instead of consuming posts that are interesting to others. The luxury lies in choosing yourself primarily and spending your time conscientiously. Maybe it’s time to finally turn our attention inwards instead of outwards, minimise distractions, and regulate ourselves.
