Do you like music and concerts? Have you ever been to a concert hall and watched a performance? Then, when COVID-19 came, how did you feel? I really like watching concerts, singing along and dancing with performers. I love that ‘feeling’ brought by loud sounds and exciting rhythms. However, due to COVID-19, I couldn’t go to the concert hall for about two years, and I felt a great depression. In the meantime, online performances have attracted great attention. Since people cannot gather in the concert hall, the performance is held in the form of broadcasting the singer’s performance online.
For my experience, I watched the online performance of THE BOYZ, one of the K-POP idol groups. Of course, it was difficult to expect people’s enthusiasm or rich sound as it was an online performance, but it was good enough to enjoy the performances they worked hard on. Furthermore, watching the performance at a warm house without consuming physical strength, I could spend time efficiently and rather feel greater satisfaction than offline performances.
How they developed, and How will they develop?
Online performances have grown significantly since COVID-19. So now that COVID-19 has almost finished, what do you think about online performances? Will online performances face a downward trend? I don’t think so. Online performances are becoming a trend all over the world. Now, online performances are being conducted in parallel with offline performances. In September, K-POP idol group ENHYPEN held its solo concert “Manifesto; Seoul” and broadcasted one of the two days of the performance on the Weverse (online streaming platform). This online performance offered opportunities for people aboard and who had difficulty coming to see the performance. It also has the advantage of lowering financial barriers to cultural life by allowing them to watch the performance at half the actual price. According to Trends Market Research, the scale of the global live streaming market was only $32 billion in 2017, but it is expected to reach $60 billion by 2026.
Then, how will online performances develop? First, it seems that it can be combined with the development of technology to provide more vivid performances. Unlike offline performances that can use various senses, 2D-based online performances have limitations in smooth interaction with performers or providing a perfect sense of liveliness. Therefore, by combining with XR technology, it will be possible to create a new experience by making interaction through virtual characters or access to the stage easier. For example, Travis Scott held a concert in video game Fortnite.
In addition, the foundation for providing effective online performances will be further laid, such as the creation of a concert hall exclusively for online performances and the development of live broadcasting-related technologies. Originally, online performances were broadcasted with equipment such as cameras installed in offline concert halls with seats. But in the future, new concert halls will be created to provide an optimized environment for live broadcasting, and multi-view technology will be introduced moreover.
