Where in the world are dvd’s?

This can either make me sound very young or very old depending on the person reading this, but growing up my main source of entertainment was through dvd’s. I remember going to the library to rent different movies on dvd. The dvd section of the library used to be right in front of the entrance, now I am not even sure there is a dvd section. My favorite songs were in a top 100 list on dvd. I would play the dvd on the television as we had a dvd-player attached. At some point we got rid of it, because nobody was using it anymore.

In this blog I would like to argue that we need to go back to using dvd’s again. There are many reasons why we should use them again, so here are a few.

First of all, renting a movie on dvd is a different experience than looking a movie up on Netflix. You actually have to go outside, get to a place where they have dvd’s to rent and pick out a movie there. This experience within itself has many pros. By going outside, you get fresh air. By going to a place with limited dvd’s there is less stress on what movie to choose. Going physically to get a dvd also makes watching a movie a full immersive experience. You might get some snacks while you’re outside or call a friend to join your nicely planned movienight.

Secondly, you get to focus on one movie at a time. On streaming services you can start watching a bunch of movies and series and never finish anything. But because of the limited time you have the dvd when you rent it, you have to finish the movie quite fast without distractions.

Third, with the amount of streaming services that exist, the options end up being limited. You have to pay for so many different services to be able to watch all the movies you want. And they always end up removing movies and series after a while. However, when we were using dvd’s for everything you just had to go to the dvd rental place and get whatever you wanted.

Lastly, a more personal reason is the way I felt handling a dvd. You were never supposed to touch the surface of the dvd, so I would hold it by the sides and carefully drop it into the dvdplayer. I felt like I was handling the most advanced technology out there and was leading the world of technology into a new dimension every time I inserted that disk into the player. This to me is an experience no one can take away from me and everybody should experience once.

To conclude, dvd’s have brought a unique kind of joy to my childhood. They create life and adventure. They connect people. But most of all they hold data that has been seen through many forms of interface and will be seen through even more in the future.
